Please respond to this quote: "I'll tell you what happened to them, this family you knew...If they were treated like the others, they were pulled out of the ghetto. They were forced into trains--men and women and children, young and old--and they were shipped to death camps." P. 195 Tell who is speaking. Tell where he is. Tell what he is trying to explain. Who are the "they" he is talking about? What happened to them? "You've shown us, Boston, that in the face of evil, Americans will lift up what's good. In the face of cruelty, we will chose compassion. In the face of those who would visit death upon innocents, we will choose to save and to comfort and to heal. We'll choose friendship. We'll choose love...." Please read the quotes printed above. These are from President Obama's speech delivered on Thursday April 18th at a service held in Boston.
Answer these questions: 1. What do you remember from the news stories that would be an example of compassion? 2. What did people in Boston do to comfort and heal one another right after the bombings? What have people done in the days since Monday? 3. What have people in Boston and Massachusetts done since the bombings to show that we are not fearful and timid, and that we will always honor our free and open society? Please answer this question:
Describe what you would do if you suddenly had more money than you ever imagined was possible? (What would you spend it on? Tell how you think you might feel about the money "...as with all retold tales that are in people's hearts, there are only good and bad things and black and white things and good and evil things and no in-between anywhere." -The Pearl
Read the quote above from The Pearl. Identify a place in the story where you think a character or some characters are behaving in a way that is "black and white" (not being open-minded or not seeing things or people in a different way) about something or someone in the story. Tell how you think the character or the characters should act instead in that part of the story. The Pearl is a novella, which means that it is either a very long short story or a very short novel with one major problem/conflict for the main character to solve.
Answer this question for homework: Describe a part of chapter one that you remember especially well. (It could be the setting, it could be something that happened, or one of the characters.) |
