I think that Esperanza is having a quiet war against society. She does want to be a mother who is lower than her husband. She wants to be treated equal. She shows this when she gets up from her chair and doesn't push it in like most women.

What Esperanza means by "quiet war" is that she is not going to give her power up to any man. She wants to relate to women in movies " In the movies there is always one with red red lips who is beautiful and cruel... Her power is her own. She will not give it away." She wants to rise up against men.
