Tell if you think the coastguard thinks Beowulf will be successful. Explain why or why not and give a quote from the story as evidence to support your opinion.
In Chapter 4 of Beowulf, the coastguard confronts Beowulf as soon as he arrives in the land of the Danes. He tells Beowulf to just go home, but Beowulf speaks to him about how he would like to fight Grendel. After his conversation, the coastguard allows Beowulf to land and go ashore.

I think the coast guard is torn between Beowulf being able to defeat Grendel or being killed by grendel. The coast guard obviously didn't doubt Grendel. If he did he would be wasting his time letting him through. I Believe it was also the way Beowulf handled the conversation and how he talked to the coast guard. He spoke to him distinctly but not harsh.

I think the coast guard thinks that he is going to fail because 10 warlords got killed by Grendel when they fought and grendel did't even get hurt. But the coast guard is wrong because bewulf kills Grendel with no weapons strapped and also no armore on

I think the guard thinks Beowulf is going to be unsuccessful in the fight against Grendel because no one has ever beat grendal before.

I think the coast guard believes that Beowulf will not be successful with his men. Because the man has herd tales of Grendel and how he ate warlords who are the greatest fighters. Beowulf also doesn't look like a great warrior. For example, "the mans not born who can get the better of Grendel. The king is resigned to it."
